Treats get a healthy makeover in time for the spooky season at Kids Unlimited Academy.

KUA classes are choosing recipes to showcase at the school’s annual Harvest Festival Oct. 30 on the Medford campus. Fun to make and fun to eat, these treats celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, as well as KUA’s commitment to wholesome foods.

Parents are asked to donate ingredients and volunteer in classrooms to help students prepare their snacks. Family participation counts toward the six KUA volunteer hours required each year.

Fresh and dried fruits and veggies, nuts and whole-grain products are the stars of KUA’s featured recipes, assembled to evoke ghosts, bats, mummies, monsters, spiders, skeletons, pumpkins, and other icons of the holidays. Families attending the school’s Harvest Festival, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., can sample students’ efforts by presenting tasting tickets — and then vote for their favorites.

KUA followers on social media can join the fun each week this month by voting for their favorite spooky snack recipe — and sharing their top tips for eating healthy amid the season’s sweets. See KU’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
